Smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is going off?

What to do while you wait

Find your situation below. These steps limit the damage and keep everyone safe.

Burst pipe or major leak

  1. Shut off the main water valve. It’s usually in the basement where the water line comes through the foundation wall.
  2. Open a tap on the lowest floor to drain the pressure from the pipes.
  3. Keep away from water near outlets, cords or the electrical panel.
  4. Move valuables off the floor and take photos for your insurance.
Burst pipes and leaks

No heat

  1. Check the thermostat setting and batteries.
  2. Make sure the boiler or furnace has power: check its switch and the breaker.
  3. Clear snow and ice from outside vents and air intakes.
  4. In a cold snap, open cabinet doors on outside walls and keep taps on outside walls dripping to help stop pipes freezing.
Boilers

No hot water or a leaking tank

  1. If the tank is leaking, shut off the cold water valve on top of the tank.
  2. Electric tank: turn off its breaker.
  3. Gas tank: don’t adjust or relight it yourself. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 from outside.
  4. Keep clear of the relief valve pipe on the side of the tank. The water can be scalding.
Hot water tanks

Drain or toilet backing up

  1. Stop running water anywhere in the house: no flushing, laundry or dishwasher.
  2. If a toilet is overflowing, turn off the valve behind it.
  3. Keep people and pets away from dirty water.

FAQ

Emergency questions

What counts as a plumbing or heating emergency?

Water you can’t stop, a burst pipe, sewage coming up through a drain, no heat in cold weather, or a leaking water heater. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, that’s a 911 call first.

Where is my main water shut-off?

In most homes it’s in the basement or utility room where the water line comes through the foundation wall, near the water meter on town water or the pressure tank on a well. Find it and test it before you need it.

What should I tell DCJ when I call?

Where you are, what’s happening, whether the main water is shut off, and anything you’ve already tried. If there’s an error code on a boiler or water heater, read it out. Ask about current availability when you call.
