Boiler Installation & Repair in Whitecourt, AB

A hot water boiler heats your home by pumping warm water through radiators, baseboards or in-floor tubing. When it acts up in a northern Alberta winter, it needs attention fast.

Warning signs

Signs your boiler needs attention

  1. No heat, or some rooms stay cold

A pump, zone valve, control or the boiler itself. If only some zones are cold, it’s often a valve, pump or air in the system.

  2. Short cycling

The boiler turns on and off every few minutes instead of running steadily. It wastes fuel and wears out parts.

  3. Banging, gurgling or kettling

Air in the system, low water pressure, or scale inside the boiler can all cause noise.

  4. Pressure too high or too low

A gauge outside its normal range, or a relief valve that drips, needs to be checked.

  5. Water around the boiler or piping

Leaks at fittings, valves, pumps or the boiler itself. Even a small one lowers system pressure over time.

  6. An error code on the display

Most modern boilers show a code when something is wrong. Write it down before you call.

When to call

Call a professional, or check it yourself?

Call a professional when…

  • You have no heat in cold weather
  • The relief valve is discharging water
  • There’s water leaking at the boiler or its piping
  • The same error code keeps coming back after a reset
  • You smell gas or exhaust, or a CO alarm sounds: get out first, then call 911
Call Now 780-779-1481

Safe to check yourself

  • Check the thermostat setting and batteries
  • Make sure the boiler’s power switch and breaker are on
  • Write down any error code and the pressure gauge reading
  • Clear snow and ice away from the boiler’s outside vent and air intake

Don’t open the boiler or adjust gas controls yourself. If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone out and call 911.

What to expect

How it usually gets fixed

Every job is different. This is the usual order of things.

  1. Check the system. Boiler, pumps, valves, pressure and controls, starting with any error code.
  2. Find the cause. No heat can come from a dozen places, so it’s narrowed down before parts are replaced.
  3. Repair. Replace the failed part: a pump, valve, sensor, ignition part or control.
  4. Restart and test. Bring the system up to temperature and check that every zone heats.
  5. Check safety. Venting, pressure and relief valve operation are checked before leaving it running.

Repair or replace

Repair the boiler, or replace it?

Repair usually makes sense when…

  • A single part has failed: a pump, valve, sensor or control
  • The boiler has otherwise been reliable
  • Parts are still available for it

Replacement is worth considering when…

  • It breaks down again and again
  • The boiler itself is leaking
  • It’s an older, less efficient unit and parts are hard to find

FAQ

Boiler Installation & Repair: common questions

Why is my boiler losing pressure?

Usually a leak somewhere in the system, a relief valve letting water out, or an expansion tank that isn’t working properly. Topping up the pressure without finding the cause just hides the problem.

Why are some rooms cold but others warm?

In a zoned system, a cold zone often points to a zone valve, a circulator pump or air trapped in that loop. If every room is cold, the problem is more likely the boiler or its controls.

What’s the banging noise in my heating pipes?

Air in the system, low pressure, or scale inside the boiler. It’s worth having checked, because the noise is often a symptom of something that will get worse.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend maintenance every year. Check your boiler’s manual for its schedule.

My boiler shows an error code. What should I do?

Write the code down, check the manual for what it means, and don’t keep resetting it if it comes back. Call 780-779-1481 and give the code and the pressure reading.
